The Guinness World Record for spinning multiple plates is held by David Spathaky, who spun 108 plates simultaneously on a television show in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996. Why am I telling you this?
As a small marketing agency owner, you will be working on and in all aspects of the agency, but spinning all the plates all of the time is not easy. But what can you do about this? … (spoiler alert: a marketing account manager)
Client services role
We ran a poll on LinkedIn earlier in 2025 asking marketers and agencies like you, when it comes to servicing your clients and managing your marketing business, what stresses do you think you need help with?
57% said more hands on support day to day and 43% said more time in the day/week. In today’s fractional world, fractional or virtual support or help via a freelance account manager could well be an ideal solution to slot into your marketing business or agency, for you and for your clients.
In another poll, we asked what do you see as the biggest benefit of an account/project manager?
39% said client comms/satisfaction and 39% said planning and organisation!
Why have an account manager or project manager
“Overwhelmed and undervalued”: Half of marketers grappling with ‘emotional exhaustion’ Marketing Week can reveal 80% of marketers have experienced imposter syndrome, while 60% feel overwhelmed. Over half of the more than 3,500 marketers surveyed have felt overwhelmed (58.1%) and undervalued (56.1%) over the past 12 months. https://www.marketingweek.com/career-overwhelmed-emotional-exhaustion/
These are worrying stats. So what can you do about it? Ask for help and get some support?
What is the role of an account manager?
An agency or solo marketer would use an account manager to act as the primary point of contact with clients, ensuring client satisfaction, managing relationships, and facilitating communication and coordination between the agency and its clients.
And how can an AM or PM help you?
• Client Relationship Management
• For comms – a filter, central point and filter (internal and external)
• Project Coordination or management
• Keeping clients happy and feeling loved, and understanding their needs
• Business development
• Campaign management
• Problem solving and research
• Resource – extra pair of hands or eyes/ears
Account manager or project manager?
Roles can vary per agency, per project. But in general terms, account managers focus on client relationships and understanding their needs, while project managers ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Benefits of having a freelance account manager or project manager
• Success rates
• ROI
• Efficiences
• Being able to scale
To name but a few benefits …
AM or PM – is now the right time?
AM or PM? I’m talking Account Management or Project Management in this instance. I could be talking about time too eg the time of day you need this help or the right time in your business or knowing when/what time to get AM or PM support.
For solo marketers and owners of micro/small marketing agencies – is it time you got some account management or project management support for your marketing business?
How do you know if and when the time is right?
It is a sign of weakness to ask for help used to be the old way of looking at things. But thankfully this has changed. Quora says “No, asking for help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it often demonstrates strength and self-awareness. Seeking assistance can indicate that you recognize your limits and value collaboration. It can lead to better solutions, foster learning, and build stronger relationships.”
